In industry, a quick glance is usually not enough. It’s about condition assessments, quality assurance, preventive maintenance—and sometimes decisions that involve large sums of money or even safety.
Whether in vessel inspection, mechanical engineering, pipeline inspection, aviation, or power plants: without reliable imaging, much remains hidden.
A good industrial endoscope doesn’t just show “something.” It shows what matters most—clearly, documentably, and reproducibly.
Today, endoscopes have become indispensable in many areas of industrial maintenance and inspection. Typical applications:
In addition, there are special applications using UV, IR, or thermal imaging technology (see previous posts).
Not everything labeled an “endoscope” is suitable for everyday industrial use. But how can you recognize good equipment?
Here are a few features that really matter:
Good resolution alone isn’t enough—what matters is how well you can make out details, even in low-light conditions. Full HD or higher should be standard today. Important: the image must remain stable even when in motion.
Not all LEDs are created equal. Look for intense, even illumination, ideally dimmable or even with interchangeable light modules (UV, IR, etc.).
A rigid shaft is robust but unsuitable for many applications. Flexible endoscopes with a steerable camera head are worth their weight in gold—especially in areas with sharp bends or narrow access points.
Devices that are too heavy, too bulky, or too complicated often end up gathering dust in a cabinet. Good systems are intuitive, ergonomic, and portable—whether on a construction site or in a factory floor.
Especially during inspections, it’s crucial that what you see is documented in a traceable manner. Good systems allow for photo and video recording, often with a comment function, memory card, or Wi-Fi connectivity.
