UV Light in Practice: Which Lamp Is Right for Me?

UV Light in Practice: Which Lamp Is Right for Me?

Why Not All UV Light Is Created Equal

Anyone who works in non-destructive testing or visual inspection knows that UV light can make things visible that remain invisible to the naked eye. But not every UV lamp works the same way—and not every one is suitable for every situation.

Some need to be compact and flexible, others powerful and stationary. Sometimes you need maximum coverage, other times pinpoint precision. And then there’s the question: How bright is it, actually, where I’m inspecting?

Sound complicated? It doesn’t have to be. With the three UV series from EVi Scopes2960, 2970, and 2980—you can cover all essential scenarios. And we’ll show you which lamp is right for which job.

What are UV lamps used for, anyway?

In short: Anywhere where fluorescence testing is involved.

This could include:

  • crack testing using penetrant or magnetic particle methods
  • Leak detection in closed systems (air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, etc.)
  • Hygiene or cleanliness inspections, e.g., in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Quality control of surfaces, coatings, or welds

The wavelength of 365 nm is the gold standard here—precisely the range offered by all three EVi Scope series. However, the ways in which you can use the light vary.

2970-365UV2 Series: All-rounder with a broad perspective

The lamps in the 2970-365UV2 series are true all-rounders—portable, switchable, and powerful enough for many standard situations.

Particularly suitable for:

  • Mobile inspections in workshops or laboratories
  • Inspection booths with good basic blackout
  • Crack and leak tests in medium-light environments

What sets them apart:

  • Switchable between UV and white light—handy when you need to quickly switch between visual inspection and fluorescence testing
  • UV-A intensity of at least 75 W/m² at a distance of 38 cm – solid performance for mobile use
  • Coverage area up to 15 cm – ideal for medium-sized components
  • Robust, modular housing – fits comfortably in your hand and is built to last
  • Compliant with EMC and IEC standards – so no issues in technical environments

In short: If you’re looking for a reliable, compact UV lamp for everyday use – the 2970 series is a strong contender.

2960-365UV1 Series: Designed for bright environments

You can’t make it dark everywhere. In warehouses, production facilities, or during mobile inspections, it’s often simply too bright for standard UV lamps. That’s exactly why the 2960-365UV1 was developed.

Perfectly suited for:

  • Inspection tests in undimmed environments
  • larger-scale applications where light intensity is critical
  • Situations with high levels of daylight

Your benefits:

  • UV-A intensity of at least 95 W/m² at 38 cm – significantly more power than the 2970
  • Coverage area up to 25 cm – inspect large areas in a single pass
  • Switchable between UV and white light
  • Effective thermal management for consistent light quality

Conclusion: The 2960-365UV1 is the right choice if you work in daylight or in production-related areas – plenty of light, no compromises.

What to Consider When Choosing

A few key questions will help you make your decision:

  • Where do you work? Indoors, outdoors, in bright or dark conditions?
  • How large is the object to be inspected? The larger the surface area, the more important the illumination width.
  • Does the system need to be mobile—or stationary?
  • How accurate does it need to be? Do you work according to standards (ASTM, Rolls-Royce, etc.)? Then you need the right Certification.
  • Is versatility important? If you switch between UV inspection and visual inspection, a white light mode is very helpful.

And don’t forget: Good lighting technology saves time. And sometimes prevents costly follow-up problems.

Conclusion: Which series is right for you?
