Boroscope vs. Endoscope – Which One Do I Need?

Why Industrial Endoscopy Is More Than Just “Taking a Look”

In industry, a quick glance is usually not enough. It’s about condition assessments, quality assurance, preventive maintenance—and sometimes decisions that involve large sums of money or even safety.

Whether in vessel inspection, mechanical engineering, pipeline inspection, aviation, or power plants: without reliable imaging, much remains hidden.

A good industrial endoscope doesn’t just show “something.” It shows what matters most—clearly, documentably, and reproducibly.

What are endoscopes used for in industry?

Today, endoscopes have become indispensable in many areas of industrial maintenance and inspection. Typical applications:

  • Pressure vessel inspection in accordance with BetrSichV
  • Inspection of turbines, engines, and gearboxes
  • Inspection of welds and internal structures
  • Quality assurance in mass production
  • Inspection in hard-to-reach or hazardous areas

In addition, there are special applications using UV, IR, or thermal imaging technology (see previous posts).

What Makes a Good Industrial Endoscope

Not everything labeled an “endoscope” is suitable for everyday industrial use. But how can you recognize good equipment?

Here are a few features that really matter:

1. Image quality

Good resolution alone isn’t enough—what matters is how well you can make out details, even in low-light conditions. Full HD or higher should be standard today. Important: the image must remain stable even when in motion.

2. Light source

Not all LEDs are created equal. Look for intense, even illumination, ideally dimmable or even with interchangeable light modules (UV, IR, etc.).

3. Probe Flexibility

A rigid shaft is robust but unsuitable for many applications. Flexible endoscopes with a steerable camera head are worth their weight in gold—especially in areas with sharp bends or narrow access points.

4. Ease of Use

Devices that are too heavy, too bulky, or too complicated often end up gathering dust in a cabinet. Good systems are intuitive, ergonomic, and portable—whether on a construction site or in a factory floor.

5. Documentation

Especially during inspections, it’s crucial that what you see is documented in a traceable manner. Good systems allow for photo and video recording, often with a comment function, memory card, or Wi-Fi connectivity.

What You Should Definitely Look for When Choosing a System

Ask yourself these questions before making a purchase:

  • What exactly do I want to inspect? Large cavities, precision mechanics, equipment in operation?
  • How do I reach the target location? Straight, at an angle, through multiple bends?
  • How bright or dark is it there?
  • Do I need to document the inspection, or is a live image sufficient?
  • How often will the device be used? (Maintenance or daily routine inspections?)

Tip: Often, the most expensive solution isn’t the best—but rather the one best suited to your application.
